What is Pilates?

Pilates is a body conditioning method, designed by Joseph Pilates, a physical-culturist, in the first half of the 20th Century. He originally called his method “Contrology” (from “control” and Greek -λογία, -logia).

It puts emphasis on spinal and pelvic alignment, breathing, and developing a strong core or center, and improving coordination and balance. Pilates’ system allows for different exercises to be modified in range of difficulty from beginning to advanced. Intensity can be increased over time as the body conditions and adapts to the exercises making it an exercise regime commonly endorsed by physiotherapists.

Tani is a fully certified Pilates instructor located in Whistler, BC. She completed Mat and apparatus certification with Physical Mind Institute Canada; providing a comprehensive Clinical approach to the Pilates method. Concurrently, she began pursuing continued education in Classical Pilates under some of today’s leading second generation Romana’s Classical Pilates instructors.

Her training approach introduces clients to Classical-based Pilates with a strong foundation in fundamentals. In addition to individualized private and semiprivate sessions, she caters to a range of fitness levels through group mat and Pilates equipment classes.

Active Lifestyle

Having a passion for an active lifestyle has been a driving point in her teaching philosophy, “we are all capable of doing great things with a little hard work and a lot of dedication.” She is a goal-setter, a goal-achiever and a progression seeker.

Passion for teaching

She especially loves teaching students who are new to Pilates. “It’s an amazing feeling when they really start to connect with their body and feel the power of their individual strengths and weaknesses. It’s like a light turns on and they want more!”

Six Key Principles of Pilates

The body’s center of gravity is the single point about which every particle of its mass is equally distributed – the point at which the body could be suspended and were it would be totally balanced in all directions.

Center also relates to the core or “powerhouse” muscles of the core.

Refining control is inherent in mastering a skill. The first time someone executes an exercise, he or she has to use control, but as skill increases, this control will be more refined. You can see a distinct difference between someone who has achieved a high level or control and one who has not.

Breath can be described as the fuel of the powerhouse, which is the engine that drives Pilates. The breath is often cued to help maintain abdominal contraction which effectively aids in stabilization of the body.

Precision can be associated with the activation of isolated muscles and at the same time with the integration of the required muscles to create movement. Precision is key to the Pilates approach to movement and to the infinite corrections that need to be implemented through the learning process.

A Pilates practitioner’s intent is to perform the exercises as correctly as his or her current skill level will allow. This requires concentration. A helpful approach is going through a mental checklist of points to focus on for each exercise.

The Pilates method has been described as “flowing motion outward from a strong center.” Flow requires a deep understanding of the movement and incorporates precise muscle activation and timing. As movement proficiency develops from extensive practice, each movement and each session should flow.
