IGNITE Performance Pilates offers Classical and Clinical Pilates in Whistler, BC; catering to the unique demands of your body and your lifestyle.
Determination today leads to success tomorrow.
It puts emphasis on spinal and pelvic alignment, breathing, and developing a strong core or center, and improving coordination and balance. Pilates’ system allows for different exercises to be modified in range of difficulty from beginning to advanced. Intensity can be increased over time as the body conditions and adapts to the exercises making it an exercise regime commonly endorsed by physiotherapists.
Tani is a fully certified Pilates instructor located in Whistler, BC. She completed Mat and apparatus certification with Physical Mind Institute Canada; providing a comprehensive Clinical approach to the Pilates method. Concurrently, she began pursuing continued education in Classical Pilates under some of today’s leading second generation Romana’s Classical Pilates instructors.
Her training approach introduces clients to Classical-based Pilates with a strong foundation in fundamentals. In addition to individualized private and semiprivate sessions, she caters to a range of fitness levels through group mat and Pilates equipment classes.
Having a passion for an active lifestyle has been a driving point in her teaching philosophy, “we are all capable of doing great things with a little hard work and a lot of dedication.” She is a goal-setter, a goal-achiever and a progression seeker.
She especially loves teaching students who are new to Pilates. “It’s an amazing feeling when they really start to connect with their body and feel the power of their individual strengths and weaknesses. It’s like a light turns on and they want more!”

The body’s center of gravity is the single point about which every particle of its mass is equally distributed – the point at which the body could be suspended and were it would be totally balanced in all directions.
Center also relates to the core or “powerhouse” muscles of the core.
Refining control is inherent in mastering a skill. The first time someone executes an exercise, he or she has to use control, but as skill increases, this control will be more refined. You can see a distinct difference between someone who has achieved a high level or control and one who has not.
Breath can be described as the fuel of the powerhouse, which is the engine that drives Pilates. The breath is often cued to help maintain abdominal contraction which effectively aids in stabilization of the body.
Precision can be associated with the activation of isolated muscles and at the same time with the integration of the required muscles to create movement. Precision is key to the Pilates approach to movement and to the infinite corrections that need to be implemented through the learning process.
A Pilates practitioner’s intent is to perform the exercises as correctly as his or her current skill level will allow. This requires concentration. A helpful approach is going through a mental checklist of points to focus on for each exercise.
The Pilates method has been described as “flowing motion outward from a strong center.” Flow requires a deep understanding of the movement and incorporates precise muscle activation and timing. As movement proficiency develops from extensive practice, each movement and each session should flow.
The classroom is a great place to challenge the body using the core concepts of Pilates with the motivation of a surrounding peer group.

“Tani had an amazing ability to connect with her students. I had never tried Pilates before so really did not know what to expect. Tani guided her class through the exercises and would apply hands-on cueing. I found this absolutely invaluable as it was hard to visualize what you were doing lying flat on your back or on your stomach. The hands-on cueing created a body awareness of what I was supposed to be doing so I felt I was getting the full benefit of the exercise. I have found that this body awareness has helped me with my golf swing as well as my posture when standing, sitting, walking – even driving my car. I have since taken Pilates classes with an instructor who doesn’t employ hands-on cueing as much as Tani did and, for me, the hands-on approach is more valuable. I would not hesitate in recommending anyone, at any level, taking a class with Tani!”
“I have been a longtime fitness fanatic and recently added Pilates to my regime. I was extremely impressed with Tani’s knowledge of body dynamics and her ability to communicate this knowledge to her students. Combined with her hands-on cueing technique to help you identify the specific areas of focus, the result is an understanding of exactly what is required to get the full benefits of Pilates.”
“Having taken Pilates class with a variety of instructors I will say that Tani’s classes are detail oriented, structured, good exercise and challenging in a personable way. Tani’s physical cues are invaluable for the poses & postures offering suggestions how to modify or increase the challenge as needed depending on the level of the student. I find Tani a personable instructor who has a pleasant demeanour and great sense of humour which really can make an hour of potentially strenuous and challenging exercise FUN !
You may think that Mat Pilates is ‘easy’, ‘looks like not much’, ‘does it really work’ Well yes it does and Tani explains how and why doing the poses correctly will strengthen, stretch and tone your body. These same principals can be directly applied into your daily life and I find that I stand taller, have better posture, more confidence and quickly simply look great. I know that Tani studied with a great instructor and has incorporated all she learned and more … it shows in her classes.”
“Currently pursuing my passion as a Tai Chi instructor, and as a former consultant to the Ministry of Education in Quebec, I feel qualified to recommend Tani Hamagishi-Allen as a gifted Pilates instructor. Not all instructors are as charming nor do they have the solid experience that comes with dedicated study and hard work. Tani’s approach of hands on cueing helps students align the body in neutral and find the correct position using the right muscles to move bones into place. Mat exercises are neither boring nor slow. I don’t see how they could be as they require all my concentration and effort to physically move into position while being aware of breathing and isolated muscle movement. Bear in mind, I am a beginner.
I was fortunate to have Tani for my first instructor. I brought my 10 year old granddaughter to class. She followed Tani’s instructions and participated in the exercises believing they would develop core body muscles for dance. I was so impressed with Tani and the unexpected pleasure I found in moving my body into new and unfamiliar ways that I do not hesitate to highly recommend her. She is a charming young woman and an inspiring instructor.”
